In 1978 Theodore Streleski, a Phd student in Mathematics at Stanford, bludgeoned his advisor, Karel deLeeuw, to death with a ball peen hammer. Streleski’s briefcase contents revealed a “hit list” with several other faculty members featured.
Streleski, a doctorate student for 19 years, claimed the mathematics faculty had been unfairly holding back his degree, and at his trial described the muder of deLeeuw as “logically and morally correct.”
Cả “hệ thống” lẫn Streleski đều phạm sai lầm nghiêm trọng. Không ai nên làm Ph.D quá 9 năm. Đáng lẽ người làm phải biết mình biết ta để “get out before it’s too late”, và khoa phải có policy về vấn đề này. Khoa tôi chỉ cho 7 năm.
